VFE Old School LEDs

The parts list calls for a red, diffuse, 5mm LED, but now that I'm getting into it, it seems that two LEDs are required... one internal and one external.  Do the LED specs described apply to both?

The one on the bottom is the bypass indicator, it can be any color you choose.  The internal one is listed as a red diffuse because those have a specific forward voltage range that will work well in the circuit.  Hope that helps.
