I've definitely read many reports about the poor quality of the Sony ear pads.  Amazon indicates that replacement ear pads are frequently bought with them, and there appear to be quite a few aftermarket pads to choose from.  Some users report that the quality of the ear pads on Sony headphones is sometimes different for different color choices of the same product (quite odd).
I'm seeing the MDR-V6 for sale only at rediculously high prices.  Is that a discontinued model?  I was looking at the Sony MDRV150 earlier today.

The descriptions I've read of the Brainwavz HM5 look like they are describing exactly what I'm after, and the price is nice.  I'll keep my mind open and keep reading for a while longer though before I officially buy something, but at the moment I am leaning this way.

When I first saw that some studio monitor headsets were in my price range, I started reading about some being 600-ohm or other high impedances that needed a quality headphone amp to work properly.  It looks like not all of them are like that though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Dave, which headphone amp circuits have you built?  I've built a few, but am always looking for new ones (assuming I can find the time).

Stumbled back on this today, so many years ago and water under the bridge. Cmoys, Erix47 which was like a doubled up Cmoy, Gilmore chip amp and also his discrete amp which garnered major attention, one designed i think by Denis Collin in Audioxpress, that was in a stereo preamp i built for my daughter's bedroom but i have it now, other's i can't remember and sorta moot now, brain surgery required the removal of an eardrum for brain access so can only hear on one side. Only wear earbuds when i'm working with my ipod on so i can completely drown out any remaining aural distractions.

These were a few in various candy tins from way back posted at diystompboxes, photobucket hosted, i still see them fine but not sure who else may see them okay. There's others in hammond enclosures and other conventional enclosures but they've sat unused for a long time now.

Yeah, I've built a couple of CMOYs over the years.  As well as Pimeta, Pimeta 2, PPA and a few others.  At this point, I'm interested in tube designs.  At some point, I'd like to build one of Gilmour's Blue Hawaii amps, but I'll need electrostatic cans to go along with it.
