Android 12...Windows11

Not anything to do with DIY but both highly recommended.  They fixed a lot of stuff that is truly annoying about Android 10 and the Windows bit is just a fine tune of Windows 10 but some nice tweaks.

I won't go into detail unless anyone wants an explanation.  It's made life easier in tiny increments so I'll consider it a WIN.

mixed bag here re: windows 11

the troubles: my 2015 macbook pro required a trip to github to even install it (no TPM) ... registry tweaks, another trip to github, and installation of a boot manager to get it fully functional post-install (restoration of context menus, ability to relocate task bar, rEFInd to turn on hardware virtualization for stuff like WSL, hyper-v, and docker) ... that said it has been rock solid as windows 10 has been and these are issues purely related to personal preference, edge use case, and frankly unsupported hardware

my considerably newer HP has some recurring display issues I assume are related either to drivers or power management ... as it is not my daily driver I haven't invested time in addressing the issue beyond rebooting to resolve.

the good stuff: Rounded corners are a long overdue UX improvement, the context menu changes make the OS much more idiot friendly, WSL is definitely better, and Windows Terminal was a power user game changer, near-future improvements like android app sideloading have serious promise

I'll let the early adopters experience all the fun and bugs and remain with Win10 for as long as possible until it is all smoothed out or Win10 is no longer supported or I can no longer update for free.

I certainly agree with that ... if I just needed my computer to work and do normal computer things I'd update to this next windows 10 LTSC next month and ride that train to the end

I only upgraded from XP when the new version of Windows (not Vista) had features I really needed.

I'm willing to bet that there are a few corporations still running XP. It's almost a complete certainty that there are XP machines running CNC mills or similar.

You'd be surprised how many corps are still running Windows 7.

This one feels nice and solid, but the honey-moon's not over yet.  As I mentioned this could easily be a 10.x version.  Mostly touchy feely things and seems just a tad perkier.

I'm even more surprised anybody runs Windows at all.

I asked the IT department about it. Most businesses don't know the first thing about Linux, Mac's are more expensive. Sure, they last longer, and there are fewer apps available for it, but it would be safer and less expensive down there road.

Linux Mint for me. The funny thing is:  it runs perfectly fine on MacBooks and any IBM-compatible machine and is extremely easy to use. Plus, the amount of available software is mind-boggling...mind-blowing. Any kind of possible thing you want to do with a computer, Linux Mint can do it. There's a PCB layout program you can download for free. There's all kinds of music-creation programs for it. Ardour is a full-feature, studio-quality DAW, and it's available...FREE.
Running Windows in comparison seems like stupidity.

I'm running macOS, windows for some of my college courses, and Kali Linux.
