Small clone with CE-2 LFO and MN3101?

Hi, I am planning to build a small clone chorus, and was thinking if it would be possible to use the CE-2 LFO and Clock IC.

My first motivation was size, since the MN3101 is half the size of the CD4047, but reading and simulating the LFO of the small clone showed that it does not oscillate easily. The wrong IC, like the TL072, and it won't oscillate at all (in Spice simulations...). Why would they stick to a design that requires certain IC characteristics to work?

I though one could get the same LFO range with more "stable" (prone to oscillate?) LFO from the CE-2, but could not find someone that tried that. There are some mods, which change the feedback capacitor to double the speed, but none that tries to expand the range of the LFO (different potentiometer maybe?).

What are your thoughts? Are there other limitations, for the MN3101, that motivates the use of the CD4047, or is it just the cost?
