Tired brain; weird title

I'm thinking about doing more etched projects, and definitely want to use solder mask. My big question is if anyone has any tips for application, specifically about excluding pads from the application.

I have this idea of using something as simple as a crayon, then just wide-brushing the solder mask before curing it. Kinda like dyeing easter eggs lol

I figure something like that would be easier than brushing around the pads, especially if they're close together.

Then I've got to decide if tinning is worth it, or if I can just mask and forget.
