Kewpie II - The mild improvement!

So a friend asked me to make him a Kewpie (Mayonnaise) Fuzz after trying out the one I previously showcased. I told him "pumpkins in a box" and he was constantly bugging me to get it to him. Our schedules at the time were fairly hectic, so even 30 minutes of driving was too much.

After he got it in his hands, he was hooked! Ran it through every amp and axe he had, and even through his ToneMaster (can't believe the deal he got on that one...). Tele, P90 LP Jr, Strat, Hagstrom, it loved it all, so he asked me to build him one. Opted for ivory over solar white. He said he wanted a full DIY feel, so no Tayda UV here, just my previous design (mildly improved) etched into rattle can paint.

The design is basically the same as before, but since I fixed the 3D printed template, the holes are actually where they're supposed to be! The face has some minor tweaks, the border design has been folded inward to actually keep it off the shoulder of the enclosure, and just feels tighter to me.

He wanted a monochrome theme going, so to add some contrast to the chrome toggle switches I bought some lever covers. I didn't know if he'd like them, as he didn't like the paddle type from the first build, and definitely didn't want short lever ones. But he was pleased, so that's a win!

Thanks for looking.

Very clean looking, I love it.

Pedal building is like the opposite of sex.  All the fun stuff happens before you get in the box.

How did you do the etch? Looks really nice.

Thanks! So I used my 5W hobby laser (takes about an hour or so for this size). Normally I'd go back and clean out the soot, which looks like this:

You cannot view this attachment. versus this new one You cannot view this attachment.

I wanted more contrast, so I carefully blew off what was on the cream/ivory finish and then just did a clear poly gloss and baked it.

For paint that isn't days old cured I run about 2000 mm/min at 100% on this 5W guy. My nephew has access to a 60W CO2 laser that would take seconds.

That looks really nice ! I haven't tried etching yet, maybe once I move out of my current (too small) place !

Thanks! Yeah you'll definitely want to have leak proof or outdoor ventilation. Those VOCs are bad juju.

I've liked all your Kewpie builds! Makes we want to finally do a white pedal, lol. And a Muff which I currently do not have in the lineup (well, the PPCB Marigold, but that's got one feet on the TB side of the fence!).

I've done a Mudbunny for a friend who loved it. Looks like Bean's successor is the Scare Bear. Worth a build, I'd say.

I called the Mayonnaise Fuzz the final form of the muff (and then proceeded to get clowned on), but there is something about it, and I stand by my claim. I'm sure Brian could work voodoo magic on it, though :)

I managed to get it into a 1590B with top jacks, but it needs 1/8W resistor footprints. (And a breakout board for 9mm pots with a weird footprint so it sits flush against the body) So, goes without saying, but much easier to do in a 1590N1/125B.

The Tayda cream/Ivory is also nice if you don't want to do your own spray, and it's powder coat.

The ivory enclosure looks properly mayonnaise-y!
