So it's safe to say that almost every BBD-based modulation effect is my 'nemesis circuit' NO matter how meticulous I've been in builds, or how much I've tried cramming related analog circuit engineering into my skull.

I've been reading about BF-2 substitutions, and if I read Mark's comments correctly, one can drop-in a xx3204, but that if the clock is running at the same rate you treat it as if you have half the stages of the xx3207. This results in a tighter effect for flangers especially.

My question is if this can be done for chorus effects, or if it would just be terrible sounding?

As long as it's pin and voltage compatible there's no harm in trying. At worst, it might be more boxy or metallic sounding than a typical bbd chorus.

Groovy. I'll double check the datasheet to be extra care, but I'll give er a go.
