I finished building my second Grapevine a while ago.  The pedal works normally except it sounds too muddy/flabby compared to the first one I built....sounds like a cheap pedal.
Substitutions:
C10  -56n instead of 50n
C15  -3n3 instead of 3n

Also I used a bipolar, audio grade Electrolytic for C12.  Is it possible this is causing the problem? or maybe a bad 2n5457?

That sounds weird. I wouldn't have thought those cap changes to have caused that sort of issue. Have you double checked you put the right parts in? I had an issue similar to that on a recent build and it was because I had switched the locations of a couple resistors, a 10K went in the place of a 120K, and the 120K was where the 10K should have been sort of thing.
