General Questions / Caline Reverb
April 08, 2015, 12:35:19 PM
Hi all!
Has anyone ever heard about the caline CP-26 "Sneak Bite" reverb pedal?  :o
I listened to it on two (pretty poor) demos found on youtube, and it seems not bad... It does not seem (to me) to be a Belton-based reverb... Maybe it is based on the MN3011 or something like that...

Does anyone know something more specific?  ::)

Build Reports / Zefiro Optical Compressor
March 24, 2015, 12:25:00 PM
Hi all, this is the Zefiro; an Optical Compressor based on the VTL5C3, so it is a pretty standard design; but I've studied several other optical compressors (Diamond Comp, Afterlife, BBE Optostomp, Demeter compulator...), and I came out with this, containing the best features of those pedals.

Well, it is an optical compressor so transparency is predominant; it is not aggressive and with the added tone control it can shape the tone before the drive stage of my pedalboard. It is definetely Always on!

Tech Help - Projects Page / Volume Pot Overdrive Pedal
February 12, 2015, 10:04:33 AM
Hi guys,
It's an overrated subject I know  ::), but I really wish to know your opinion on that... Most of the OD pedals project you can find, end up with volume pots values in the range of 50k to 250k max (as well as all the MB overdrive projects... except for the Neutrino); I know someone who said that this is due to the low impedence the volume pot "sees" from the output of the amplifying stage.
From this poin of view, it could be see as a mistake using a high resistance pot (such as 500k)...

But I've also noticed that: the higher the pot value, the higher the overall output.

I'm not talking about frequencies cuts (lows or highs), I'm just interested in the overall output you can get out of an overdrive pedal without adding an additional gain stage (which could introduce more undesidered saturation)...

Thanks!!  8)

ps: sorry for my english...   :-[

General Questions / Afterlife + Bloviator

What do you guys think about this two effects in one? I like the smothness of the first and the clarity/definition of the second...  ::)

Hi guys, I'm going to ask you a really simple question...I'd like to know your point of view on that... What really makes and affects the touch sensivity of a pedal, and what are (in your opinion) the best way to implement this feature...

I do have my own (personal) interpretation of this topic, and, according to my experience, I've already answered this question...
I think that, for (just) 9v volts powered pedals, the sensivity IS the sensibility (of the circuit) to the instant variations in voltage of the guitar signal, having the ability to amplify it as faithfully as possible, until clipping occurs...

What's your opinion on that?

Build Reports / FlameXS
October 22, 2014, 11:43:59 AM
Hi everyone  ;)

It's been a while since I posted something, last pedal was the Sparkle Dynamic Overdrive... Here is the FlameXS. It is basically a Booster/Buffer pedal; the buffer stage is activated when "switched off", and it is modeled after the classic transistor buffering stage using both the MPSA18 and J201.
The booster section was originally developed similarily to the Fatpants, but then I've changed the entire biasing network of the jfet (J201) to make it respond as close as possible to a triode tube preamp (I used, as a starting point, the wonderful article on Runoffgoove about the Fetzer Valve)... so I've created the FlameXS, very small in size and capable of 13 to 15 dB of clean boost...  8)

Bye!  ;)

Build Reports / Sparkle -Dynamic Overdrive
September 03, 2014, 07:25:20 AM
Hi guys, this is my Sparkle... A very dynamic overdrive I designed... The drive section is a pretty standard design: IC followed by a couple of clipping diodes between stages. It has a baxandall tonestack in it so I could dial with the bass and treble content...

Carefully chosen buffer stages on input and output, make the tone really warm and touch sensitive...

It is also my first pedal with glittered powdercoating paint and silk screen...

I'll post gut shots asap...

Cheers...

Mods / Upper decker Mods
July 24, 2014, 11:36:56 AM
Hi guys, has anyone tried (or found) some mods to the Upper decker? I was thinking of replacing the ICs, trying some different clipping diodes (maybe some Germanium once, to give the pedal just a bit of fuzzy sound, but not too much...)... I was thinking also to add a SND/RTN loop right between the EQ Baxandall section and the first clipping section.
It could be interesting to put pedals like phasers (or any modulation one) in this loop... Do you think it could be a good mod?  ::)

Tech Help - Projects Page / Pots & Knobs
June 09, 2014, 11:09:39 AM
Hello everyone,
I need help from you regarding the pots Shaft dimensions and the related knob to be used with.

In particular, I want to use PCB mounted pots, but here is the issue:
The 16mm and 9mm potentiometers from Tayda has a (totally round) Shaft diameter of 6.35mm, but, all the knobs from the same seller have the shaft diameter of 6.3mm.
So my question is: Where do you buy the knobs if you want them to be installed on the (PCB mounted) pots from Tayda?

Thank you!  ;)

Hello guys! Have anyone tried the custom graphics services that Mammoth offers?  :)

I'm planning to have a bunch of ten pieces of 1590A enclosure with a graphic I designed; but the layout they provide (that rectangle with green margins) seems to not perfectly match the real dimensions of the outboard of the 1590A enclosures.

Is that normal?

Just for info, my workflow is the following:
1) Circuit design phase (Eagle CAD), schematic + PCB
2) Print the PCB in pdf format
3) Import in inkscape the following files:
    - pdf of the PCB
    - pdf of the enclosure (downloaded from hammond web site)
    - pdf of the Mammoth graphic layout
4) Align the position of all holes
5) Keep the Mammoth layout to be sent to production.

Do you think this is the proper way to do that  :P (... I know there's not only one - right - way to do things...)

Bye!

Build Reports / Side 4 Drive overdrive +Boost
April 01, 2014, 12:27:11 PM
Hi all, this is my last build, it's called the Side 4 Drive... It is basically ab overdrive pedal based upon the schematic of an OCD v3, but I modified the clipping section...
I also added a boost switch, with a dedicated gain control knob... It is a simple but very angry Jfet booster...

Cheers...

Hi all,  ;)
Does anyone know about sources online where it could be purchase a service of pedal graphics?
I'd like to buy the pedal already painted (powder coating paint) and with graphics I design (so it'd be a custom graphic service)...
I know that Mammoth Electronics and PPP already offer this service, but the shipping costs from USA to Italy are way too much... is it possible we don't have resources like Mammoth or PPP in EU (except for musikding in Germany)??  :o :o :o  ???

I do like to make pedal graphics, but (as most of us) I can only do it by means of decals... or (at least) adhesives; I'm searching for something more "professional" like (as I said) laser engraving or silk-screen..

Thank you all!

Build Reports / Crystal Fire
February 12, 2014, 11:25:45 PM
Hi all, this is my last build... It is actually a buffer/booster pedal, I used the fatpants for booster and the Pete Cornish for the buffer stage...
So when the booster is turned off, then the buffer is activated (in the "crystal side" of the enclosure :P ) and viceversa...
I encountered (as anyone who has built the fantpants) some scratching on the fat pot when the body switch is off... Do you have any suggestion on how to remove (or at least attenuate) it? Because it's so loud that I really can't turn the fat knob while the pedal is engaged...

General Questions / Zonkin’ Yellow Screamer
January 29, 2014, 10:42:25 PM
Hi folks! I was looking for a TS808/TS9 to build, as close as possible to the originals for my guitar teacher, and then, magically, I came across this Zonkin' Yellow Screamer

:o :o :o :o :o  WHOAAA
I still have no words... it is amazing! it's basically a heavily modded 808, but I can't find any schematic out there...

Have you ever heard about it?

Build Reports / Three Pedals Build report
January 28, 2014, 09:58:13 AM
Hi all, I'm glad to show you my first three pedal that I've built after a looong break I took some years ago...

Pedal #1: Tonebender MKIII
It is actually the madbean pasty face; I used three germanium transistor from musikding and I have modified some caps and resistors value just to ...
I added the DBS control (I called it this way  ;D) which stands for Dying Battery Simulator... It is awesome! It gives a bunch of different sounds you can get out of this effect...

Pedal #2: The Floyd Reason
This pedal is modeled after the MXR custom '78 badass distorsion... Probably one of the best-sounding distorsion I've built... I really like it, and I found it to be suitable for achive the Gilmour sound in song such as Numb...

Pedal #3 The Blackboard Reverb
This pedal is modeled after the Mr Black Supermoon, very ambient - friendly reverb, it is perfect to be used with long delays or volume pedals... Very cool!

Open Discussion / Archtop jazz guitar compressor
January 09, 2014, 09:22:35 AM
Hi all, I've been searching around a lot these days, looking for a sweet, gentle and warm compressor to be used with an archtop jazz guitar of a friend of mine...
The archtop guitars are (among all the jazz family ones) the more touch sensitive; so I'm searching for a nice compressor, which could warm up the sound of the guitar (giving a bit of sustain) in a clearly audible way, but without adding "color" such as distorsion (or too much compression)...
I tried something such as the simple orange squeezer, and I found it to be suitable for the "gentle-compression" and "warming up" features that I'm looking for...

Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!!
