Build Reports / Boneyard + Thunderpuss!
October 18, 2012, 10:52:18 AM
This one is for a good friend of mine. His name is Onis Emmanuel Rodriguez, but his artist name is EmaRodz. It's Christian pop/rock. He is crazy talented. One of those freaks of nature that can produce, mix, play keys, piano, guitar, bass, drums...and everything on that list he does amazingly. Nominated for a latin grammy and everything for producing best album of the year.

Anyways...Here's the pedal! I incorporated his logo which has the word "AMOR" (love) in red. The Thunderpuss works brilliantly with this circuit! I have some pop with the boost which I read is normal, but I'm thinking of using a pull down resistor to tame it? Would that work?

He wanted to call it the Marsh-Kal plexi so there it is! haha Hope you guys like it.

It's been a while since I've been around here! I've missed all u beaners! Haven't been building too much since I've been blessed to be gigging a lot with a Christian artist and we've been flying pretty much every week! (As a matter of fact I'm writing this in a plane somewhere between Dallas and Orlando! haha)

I am proud to say, I have been gigging using Bean pedals exclusively! (except for the Timeline and tuner). Always get tons of compliments about tone and I have you guys to thank for that!! :)

Anyways, just wanted to say hi to all of you and really, I think I'll hang out more often. I don't want the DIY fever to die out ever! lol

I leave you all with the new beautiful addition to my small family, just came back from playing it this weekend in San Diego using the Egodriver and the Mangler and it sounded killer!!

Open Discussion / NAD! Morgan KR35!
July 12, 2012, 05:19:45 PM
I posted this over at TGP but I wanted to share it with my beloved 'Beaners!  :D

Joe Morgan just emailed me the pictures of my KR35. It will be here next week!!

It's an RCA35 with hi/lo inputs, effects loop, KT66 power tubes, switchable 12AX7/EF86 and something with the caps (Joe told me on the phone but I was so excited that I blanked that part out haha) And the white panel with icons for controls just for fun

The speaker on this one is the G12H30 per Joe's recommendation. I can't wait!!

Build Reports / Orange Plexi (Boneyard content)
June 30, 2012, 10:05:18 AM
Man...I've been out of the game for a few months! You guys are building some AMAZING pedals!! I have to step up my game to keep up with you guys! haha

So, the original idea was to paint the enclosure orange and use a white decal to resemble an Orange Rockerverb head, but the guy I built it for wanted to paint it and ran out of orange paint...so white it is.

Worked out cool anyway cause I made it look like an Orange Tiny Terror and worked out great!

Here are some pics!

As part of a trade deal, the guy who I built this for, made me a custom oversized 1-12 cab. I built him the plexi and I'm also building a compressor for him.

I swapped the speaker for a WGS Reaper (improved Celestion G12H30) and now it sounds INCREDIBLE!

Hey dudes!

I'm working on a Boneyard project for a friend who wanted it to look like an Orange amp so I just finished putting the graphics together and thought they look great! I wanted to share it with you guys in case you wanna use it!

The plan is to use the anodized orange finish from PPP and print out this on a white waterslide decal and lay it out like that so it looks like it's the faceplate on an orange rockerverb.

It is already to scale into a 1790NS enclosure just like my Plexi Legacy I posted here a while back.

If you want the native .psd file let me know! :)

Fellow wise beaners...a guy on Craigslist wants me to trade my 80's Mesa/Boogie .50 Dual Caliber+ head for a 1968 Fender Bassman head. He claims his amp works great, just retubed recently. thoughts?

Here's the picture he sent me:

Here's my Mesa:

If I don't make the trade, I'm selling my amp for $475. Here's the link to it:

http://orlando.craigslist.org/msg/2883608020.html

I just wanna get input on this trade from you guys. If it turns into a conversation of somebody wanting to buy or trade then maybe Jacob can move this thread to the Buy/Sell/Trade section. :)

Thanks dudes!

Build Reports / '71 Camaro Z28 OCD
February 04, 2012, 10:30:18 PM
Hey guys! It's been a while since I've been around...I've missed ya'll!  :D haha

So, this is probably the most special pedal I've built so far. My Dad used to have a '71 Camaro Z28 in gold with black stripes and he's been dreaming about having one back for years...

Recently he picked up his electric guitar again and I wanted to motivate him so I built him this modified OCD. I used Brian's clip mod except I went with asymetrical clipping. Sounds very tube-like! Also, I installed a second level knob to control the HP and LP volume independently. I retained the stock resistor values to keep the same tone and basically added the second pot into a 4PDT switch.

Component wise, I used the same recipe I've posted around a couple times which to me is a killer combo! Starting with the BAT41 clipper.

Now, probably the coolest thing about this pedal is the LEDs. I wired them so that when you step on the Ignition, it turns ON both LEDs and the sound is LP by default. When you step into the Overdrive it will light up the high beams and go into HP mode!  8) Gotta say, I'm pretty proud of the outcome...It sounds amazing and it's a killer versatile pedal!

The guts are not my cleanest work, but the fact it fired up the first time made it all good :P

Here are some pics, hope you guys like them!:

OK, so even though I've done this a bunch of times, I haven't found THE best way to finalize the full-face graphics with clear spray onto the pedal enclosure.

My question is, do any of you recommend to cut the holes on the graphics FIRST, and THEN spray the clear? Or apply the graphics FIRST and THEN cut out the holes with a razor?

Just wanna hear some feedback from you wise people before I finish my Dad's Christmas present (late i know..) :)

Thanks!

Merry Christmas dudes and girls

Build Reports / Ironman Compressor
September 26, 2011, 06:25:32 PM
Here's a Modified Ross Compressor from guitarpcb. My friend wanted an Ironman theme compressor so I designed this look using the Anodized Red finish from PPP and some gold knobs my friend chose from ebay.

Unfortunately I found that the waterslide decals don't adhere as well to the anodized finish as they do on glossy powder coated enclosure, so I had some air bubbles in the finished pedal which only appeared after I sprayed the second coat of clear :(

Kinda looks cool though...

Insides are OK. Wanted to be a little cleaner but, well, honestly the only people that look at that stuff are u guys! haha

Audio/Video Demos / Strymon Timeline and madbean pedals!
September 09, 2011, 05:36:35 PM
Just got this beast (Timeline) today and I wanted to share it with you guys...I love it!!!

The demo is really mostly about the Timeline but I'm using my Egodriver in one of the videos (white rhino) and my MoRC from guitarpcb :)

You'll see in the pedalboard the Mangler (Kriegsheld Flaum) and the GGG 808.

Enjoy!

Mods / "2 Channel" Egodriver
August 30, 2011, 01:27:10 PM
Hey guys,

I love my Egodriver a lot...it is my main overdrive right now (I did some minor mods to mine, mostly played with cap types and used BAT41 for clipping. Search for White Rhino under Build Reports for more details ;))..anywho, the way I built it was with a secondary footswitch which allows me to change between HP and LP modes easily. HP mode is fantastic for soloing cause it really cuts through the mix due to the higher frequencies passing, however the change in volume can be pretty abrupt, specially in small venues. I've found that in large venues and open arenas it works perfectly as it is.

So, I was thinking that adding a secondary volume pot in parallel with the existing one and switching it along with the modes would give the flexibility of having the HP mode in a particular volume and LP in a separate volume. Pretty straightforward I think. I have sketched it up like this:

I haven't tested this, but I really don't see why wouldn't it work. I think this would provide great flexibility and more control over this circuit, especially in live settings :)

What do you guys think?

Build Reports / LaVache (the puzzle)
August 12, 2011, 09:17:04 PM
A friend of mine has a small company called Compassion Clothing. He puts out some awesome designs in t-shirts and part of the proceeds go to organizations like World Hope. I always loved his designs and I decided to use "The Puzzle" design from his shirts (of course he and I talked about it first :D). Basically says "I AM COMPASSION" but at the same time asks "AM I COMPASSION" which challenges us to be compassionate for the needy and love people :)

About the sound...I'm not feeling the love yet :(...I only had a 2N5088 for it (which I know it's supposed to be the original) but I really wanna tweak this one out. I used BAT41s and 1N914s. Also, I notice the gain knob kinda bunches up a little at the end of the sweep, for which I'm considering changing to audio taper instead of linear..i dunno...I know there's potential so I'm not giving up yet :) Not making it to my pedalboard yet though...

The LEDs are yellow and white...I know the white one looks blue, but oh well! hehe Hope u guys like it!

Ok,

So this is the same boneyard I opened another tech help post but for a different issue (with the boost switch) but that got fixed by removing one wire (http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=2267.0).

I was playing around with it last night, sounds and works perfectly. I'm on high gain mode and decide to see the range, so I turn the knob all the way down and I see that it cleans up pretty well. Then I switch to Crunch mode and I get this nasty fuzz type sound (which it doesn't sound too bad I should say). So I noticed that (On crunch mode) if I turn the High Gain knob past ~15% it stops doing that fuzz tone and goes back to the normal Crunch sound I'm using... ???

So I popped the lid off and I recreated the issue again. Had both know half way. Played on crunch mode while I turn down the High Gain and when I get on the first 15% area, I see the first red LED (the far left looking at the board component side up) light up bright and steady. When I play all three light up very bright as it seems I'm feeding them with a lot of voltage. As soon as I turn the High Gain back up, the brightness drops and I have normal behavior again...

It sounds like a happy accident which I wouldn't mind that much if the pedal was mine, but it's not, so what ideas come to mind guys?

Thanks!

So I have a quick question for you guys. I was playing this pedal last night and I used a Tele and a Les Paul. Both sounded incredible with the bridge and neck pickups. However, when using both pickups with the Tele or LP, I can hear a subtle but noticeable high frequency whine over the sound. It's not something crazy though, I can easily fix it rolling off the tone knob on the guitar, but it is somewhat annoying that I would have to do this.

Now, I've read a few people having issues with MAX1044 "whine". Is this the same issue? I have the MAX1044A from SB. Would changing this IC fix this issue, or should I look into increasing or decreasing one of the ceramic caps in the circuit?

How about grounding pin 6 on the charge pump? I know on the datasheet says that would be necessary for voltages less than 3.5V, but is it worth a shot?

Thanks guys!
