Open Discussion / Re: Advice on modding a Crybaby
February 29, 2024, 05:30:37 AM
I'm only seeing two transistors there, so I don't think there's a buffer to remove. For the TB mod, take a look at Stinkfoot's site. He tells how to do it on all the various Dunlop versions, so the oldest wired one would probably be translatable to this Thomas Organ one.

I never know that about the Q resistor. I upped it to 47k on the old Dunlop I have and it was an improvement, but I may try taking it out to see what happens.

Ah, thanks for the tip! I didn't know about the fader version. I was seriously about to order the spray. I recently got an Area 51 pot for an old wah I picked up on Reverb (soon to get a new PCB too, thanks to blackhatboojum), and I like that it's not sealed so you can use something like the Caig products on it without taking the whole pot apart.

Yes, the gains and leakage can show up differently with even small changes in voltage. I built an RG Keen tester on vero, then grabbed duhvoodooman's Ge calculation spreadsheet off the BYOC forum. That way I was able to enter the exact resistor values from my vero on the spreadsheet. That way I didn't need to hunt down the oddly specific resistor value the Keen tester was calling for. I built both PNP and NPN testers, so then created tabs for each of those within the spreadsheet. I just hook the vero up to a battery, but I measure the battery every time so I can enter the exact voltage in that cell. Not an issue if you're using a regulated power supply, of course!

Love how it looks and a purple LED was the right choice! I'm sure they sold out in about a second...

Oh man! Somehow I knew you'd pull this off before the end of the year. It does sound amazing. I need to build up that DM-3 first, but this is on the list too once I get ahold of a board. I really want to hear from someone who tries the Ibanez-style filters on their build so I don't tackle that decision point sight unseen (or sound unheard, I guess?).

I'll be down to join this if it comes together!

The guts do look like that! They're almost trippy with that curve in the wires, which goes well with the sound. The PN-2 was definitely the first tremolo I wanted but they were already out of production by that time.

Rej, to answer your question, we drove from Wisconsin all the way to Montreal. I received a large parking ticket in the old Montreal area when I did not see the "livres seulement" sign near my parking spot.  :) I could understand what it said, but it was kind of hidden!

Thanks for sharing your schematic! That gives me some ideas for what to try next.

Yeah, I love this! Congrats! I still haven't taken the plunge on layouts other than vero.

I did manage to grab a used wah on Reverb and have started modding it to learn what's what until the Weener Wah is back in stock. It's a 1990 revision E without the input buffer. It's already got the 390r Q1 emitter resistor and the 33k in parallel with the inductor. I upped that to 47k to see if it would bring out a bit more vocal quality. It does sound good! I'd be curious what values you like where.

Thank, Rej! @blearyeyes, Ian at Ghost Effects did put some of those switches as well as the external trimmers onto pots. The board I have wasn't set up that way unfortunately. For my money though, the "drive" switch on a footswitch and the 2nd internal trimmer on an external pot would be the biggest wins.

Yes, it is! Thought about you while I was traveling in Quebec this past summer.

No worries! We will all be here. I know my family could use some rest and catch-up too as the year winds down, and you've had a year for sure!

Open Discussion / Weener Wah restock status

Oh man, I was just about to grab a Weener Wah having gotten ahold of an old Crybaby finally! When do you anticipate those being back in the shop?

So I finally scored a used Crybaby, which looks to be "revision E" from 1990 (first time they used the board mounted jacks). It's actually got the 390 ohm Q1 resistor and the 33k Q resistor. Transistors are 2n3904, not MSPA18. Interesting! Also, for some reason they used a 2.2uf cap instead of the 4.7uf that most seem to use. It's just got a scratchy pot, but once I deal with that I'll be in a better position to see if I need/want to swap out the board or do mods.

One quick question though--the board is missing the screw that holds it down, so it can actually move a bit since the jacks weren't tightened down much. What type of screw is the right size/type for that spot? Nothing in my toolbox seems to work. Looks like a Menard's trip is my future!
