Hey y'all, any advice on a good mid priced soldering iron? I would also appreciate some of your sage advise on must have tools for a fledgling DIY'ER like myself?

Kinda depends on what you mean by mid priced, but the Hakko FX-888 comes in at just less than (US)$100 and is pretty much perfect. It may be the best iron out there at any price.
