PN2222A ok to sub for 2N2222?

The only reason I ask is the PN2222a is readily available, while the other seems to be fading away.  When I put 2n2222 in in the Fairchild site, this came up as a suggestion

For the most part, it's small differences in voltage and current handling capability. But, that varies some with manufacturer too, so you have to check the data sheets anyway if you are pushing up against the limits of what they can do. The 2N has the cool metal case and the PN is a typical TO-92 plastic part (which could have something to do with the current handling differences.) The 2N's do still look to be available if you want to spend the extra cash or you really need the extra current (which is not likely for an effect pedal).

Soundwise, for whatever it's worth, I've tested an SMD MMBT2222A against a metal can 2N2222a and I couldn't hear any difference.
