Compressor + Rat

Anyone else HAVE to put a compressor before a rat to tolerate it? Every rat I try or build has an audio issue with my duncan blackouts (im guessing). Maybe to much bottom.. Anyway if I hit 2 notes that harmonize in a certain way A# & D it just bottoms out for a sec. But if I place my BYOC 5 knobber infront of ANY of them it sounds frikin awesome. Strait metal sound and I LOVE it. Just leaves me a lil disappointed that the effect can't do that by it's self
