Just curious if people on here liked them, used them, etc.

One of the reasons I bought an amp again recently (sold most of my hardware/gear years ago) is because I wasn't liking the tones I was getting recording direct with amp sims. I still think they are cool and can be used creatively but I think they just can't nail a true tube sound. They have gotten a whole lot better in the last 5 years but don't know if they will ever be able to truly capture a true tube tone.

I am gathering up my parts to complete this Current Lover and was considering running it with a Road Rage for the additional headroom.

Would I still be able to use 16volt capacitors or would I have to up them?

Sure it's a dumb question but I have not done anything like this before....so take it easy on me!

Lastly, I noticed that C19 is skipped on the build document. Was there a reason for this or just a typo?

Thanks!

Open Discussion / Mounted Pots vs Wired Pots....
April 24, 2014, 03:33:38 PM
One thing I have noticed that most people on here board mount their pots. I understand this enables you to not have to deal with wiring them which keeps things cleaner as well as having your PCB secure but it also pigeonholes you into having to have your knobs wherever they are located on the PCB which can take away some of the DIY fun IMO.

For me personally, I like the freedom of placing knobs wherever I want them and a lot of times that depends on the graphics and/or enclosure. I have yet to board mount a pot and I am almost afraid to because I think the ease of it might convert me. It is irritating dealing with the extra wire and fitting stuff in tighter places....no doubt.

I am just curious what other people thought about this.

Open Discussion / Waterslide Inkjet Issue
April 21, 2014, 03:04:59 PM
I am having an issue every once in a while where you can see the ink on the edge of the decal is getting rubbed off some when I go to put it on the enclosure. Is this a result of not enough clear coat on the decal or a timing issue with the decal in the water?

This has only happened to me a few times but it's super annoying when it happens.

About to finish a build that will not be painted. This will be my first aluminum non-painted enclosure with a waterslide.

Any tips? sand 600-800-1000-1200-etc? Overkill?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Open Discussion / What 4P3T is this?
April 07, 2014, 12:39:26 PM
Does this one look familiar? I am trying to get all my parts together for this Soaring Skillet and none of my 4P3T that I have have the proper pins to board mount this. Obviously, the plastic ones from smallbear do not have the same pinout as this one. I have a similar looking one I got off ebay but it doesn't fit either.

Just curious if someone is familiar with this style???

Open Discussion / Patch Cables and Power Supplies
April 03, 2014, 12:50:07 PM
Goind to build a pedal board and wanted some suggestions on either DIY stuff or power supplies and patch cables for good prices.

Quality doesn't have to be great because I won't be gigging with it.
#108
I have read about this method before and even bought some of the stuff a while back.

Anyone try it? If so, can you compare it to waterslide and/or other methods?

...and don't want to spend the money on one now....

Get this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00068IJSG/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1395974138&sr=8-1

Super cheap and works great. I just desoldered a pc mount 4P3T (16 lugs) in less than 5 minutes.

It takes a while to heat up but works great.

So since December when I got into this hobby, I started purchasing PCBs. At first it was just like maybe 3 or 4 more than I was actually building but now it's gotten out of control. I probably have 35 different pcbs that I need to build that I haven't even started. I didn't want to miss out on anything that sounded interesting especially when fabbed pcbs go in and out of stock all the time, so I would jump on anything and everything that sounded appealing.

On top of that, periodically, I would go through the BOMs that I had at the time and order all the parts (plus extras) for those builds. Well, now...four months later, I am like.....crap, I am in over my head. I don't know and/or remember what components I have, don't have a clue which pcb will be the next one to work on, and I got about 4-5 builds that need to be boxed, yada yada yada

Just to be clear, all my stuff is organized in bins but I don't have any inventory spreadsheets yet filled out. So this isn't a case where I am dealing with a mess, more like....my heads a mess...LOL.

Obviously, there are probably many of you that deal with this so I was just looking for some sound advice on what's the best way to "get it together" and stay focused. I feel like it was way easier to focus in the beginning when it was just a few pedals on the mind than it is now.

Part of me feels like..."okay, do not buy another board until you build everything that you have" but I am not sure if that realistic.

Some people will probably just say that this is the nature of the beast with this addiction but I have to believe that people have went through something similar to this and balance things out.

Thoughts?

Just curious what people thought about the different chips in this circuit. Is it a wash or does one sound better than the other?

Opinions?

Hi Guys, finally boxed my Sharkfin. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I totally love the pedal, probably my favorite pedal so far.

Special thanks goes out to Cortexturizer for his trim pot mod on R15. He went above and beyond helping me with this mod. This mod really let me dial in the filter better. I would still like to do the clean mix mod as well as the sample/hold bi-color LED mod but I just wanted to finally get this thing boxed.

I even included my first gut shot  :-[. Still a little messy but I am getting better. Anyway, pics are a little foggy today and am I not sure why.

I will be adding a demo soon.

Open Discussion / Bi-color LED question
March 21, 2014, 02:09:12 AM
On my Sharkfin, there is a dedicated LED for the LFO rate. Is possible to wire this so that a bi-color LED switches between colors rather than on/off?

Probably a silly question......

Open Discussion / MF-104(M) Analog Delay

Anyone own one of these?

If so, how do you like it?

I just recently purchased a couple of MN3008 from Paul and am looking to build an analog delay. I gave up trying to find any 3005s so I went with 3008s. I am finishing up a Multiplex Echo Machine at the moment but I am looking to do an analog delay. One of the reason I wanted to get into pedal building was to build an analog delay. Little did I know that the best chip is nearly impossible to find.

Would the Aquaboy Deluxe be people's recommendation for the 3008s?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

So I got some great advice on drilling methods from many of you....

...now I need some advice on wiring.

When you realize you need your wires to be a little longer than you orginally cut them and you have already soldered them, how do you extend them? Do you just cut the wire, solder another piece, and tape them?

Just trying to get the cleanest method. Desoldering from switches and pots isn't a big deal but don't like to desolder wire from the PCB if I don't have to.

I am trying to get my wiring neater so I can actually post the guts on one of my builds finally  ;)

Open Discussion / Tips on drilling enclosures....
March 18, 2014, 12:51:43 AM
Okay, so one of the parts I hate with pedal building is drilling the enclosures. I don't like predrilled enclosures because I don't like to be confined to placing hardware.

Besides buying a drill press, any tips or tricks on making sure you drill spot on?

As of now, I print my graphic on a paper, tape it down to the enclosure, tap a starter hole, Drill a small hole, then use a step drill bit to the size I need.

It works okay but I never seem to get it perfect. Maybe my drill walks a little, not sure.

Just curious if anyone had any tips or tricks when using a handheld drill?

Open Discussion / I learned something today....

That reflowing with a small chisel tip is the way to go.

Up to this point, I have always used a fine conical tip for everything. Well that works great for most things except reflowing.

....and now I question if maybe a chisel tip is the way to go period.....?

Reflowed my Sharkfin and fixed the turd filtering effect I was getting  8)

sh!tty day turn great!

Open Discussion / Fabricated PCBs
March 14, 2014, 01:12:21 PM
I am suprised that there isn't a sticky somewhere in this forum that has all the guys here who sell fab PCBs.

I have found (and bought) so many different PCBs by searching sigs or word of mouth that otherwise I may not ever have found.

Is this unethical because this is a Madbean forum? I wouldn't think so because we all like to build more pedals than we know what to do with.....but if it is, I apologize and we can let this thread die. I am mainly just talking about members sites.

As a noob, it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to something like this. Maybe there already is?

Thoughts?
