Build Reports / Rub-A-Dub that's been a long time coming
December 05, 2019, 03:06:13 PM
So after asking for advice in this thread back in March 2017 about working with Tweed

http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=25082.msg244350#msg244350

I've finally gotten my ass in gear and finished a tweed covered pedal.  I've recently gone back to an egnater tweaker and realised just how much I've missed one of these.  They're super cheap but just sound fantastic I genuinely don't know why I sold my old one.  The only thing which really bugs me with the tweaker is the lack of verb and thanks to John and Cleggy I had a rub-a-dub in my build pile.  I couldn't think what kind of finish I wanted so I finally had a go with the tweed and I think it turned out pretty good for a first effort.

This is a recycled enclosure which is why the pcb is upside down

Just tweed

First coat of shellac

Second coat - this was as dark as I wanted to go this time

Open Discussion / Single knob pedals

So I have an enclosure I really like but have repurposed the effect into a multi.  What can I put in there instead?  The labelling is nonsensical so that wont affect what goes in there and it can only have 1 control as it's covered in envirotex so drilling more holes is out.

My only veto is fuzz I'm just not a fuzz guy so it would be wasted on me.  So apart from fuzz what circuit should I put in there?

Almost forgot it's a 1590B

VFE Projects / Red wolf
October 22, 2019, 12:20:46 PM
So one of the rewards I got from peter when he was running his patreon page was the red wolf pcb but I can't seem to find the build doc or schematic in the previous rewards file he sent out.

Does anyone have a build doc for the red wolf they can send me?

General Questions / Belton brick in the loop
October 17, 2019, 05:35:36 AM
Does anyone have experience of using belton brick based delays in a line level effects loop?  I've recently bought an egnater tweaker and as there's no reverb was going to build one but would like to use it in the loop and if they wont like line level I'll probably buy a hall of fame for the loop instead.

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Two amps phase reversal
September 06, 2019, 02:56:01 PM
Hmm so I want to try a wet dry rig have a few delay/modulation pedals with two outputs but whenever I've tried running my hot rod deville and egnater tweaker one of them is out of phase and the whole thing sounds weak.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to either build a new ABY box with a phase reversal switch or whether I can build a stand alone switch to use after one of my dual output pedals.

General Questions / Help for a fuzzface noob
June 04, 2019, 05:37:14 AM
I haven't built anything since my son was born 10 months ago and want to get back into the hobby I've missed it.  I've just been given an empty fuzzface enclosure so it would be rude not to use it but can't decide what to put in it.  I was thinking about modding is a bit and fitting silicon and germanium boards in it with a switch to select which one I use.  I picked up some BC183s from pedalhacker last year for the silicon but am absolutely clueless for the germanium can anyone school me a bit on whether I want NPN or PNP?  To save hassle I'm just going to order a  matched set from smallbear but the choice is a bit overwhelming.

Build Reports / KoT clone again
February 11, 2018, 01:36:21 PM
I needed a new kot I sold my last clone cause I really wanted top mounted jacks and saw fuzzdog has a new one with a charge pump... It would have been rude not to.

When I came to box it up though the tone pots were fouling on the volume and gain pots so it wouldn't fit in my enclosure.  I'd used the build doc drill temp in gimp without measuring which is entirely my own fault so I emailed Lee to let him know it needed adjusting incase someone else has this issue.  I got two emails back one to say thanks for letting him know he'd look into it and another to say those drill points should have been 4mm lower and I could try 9mm pots if I wanted to salvage my enclosure.  The really great thing is he popped 2 in the post free of charge which turned up 2 days later.

Thankfully it all went together fine this time.

Build Reports / Basic Loops
February 04, 2018, 07:04:02 AM
Just a basic box with two loops in it so I can A/B some pedals.  I love the picture on this it always makes me smile.  Not particularly tidy guts but it's quiet and it works so it'll do.  Almost all of it has been recycled from older builds which never saw the light of day.

Build Reports / Haunting Mids Overhype
January 30, 2018, 12:56:20 PM
I decided to rebuild my first ever pedal I was originally just going to redo the wiring but it was pretty noisy and the 3pdt was borked so I just pulled the guts and gave it a complete overhaul.  It's a Son of Clay Jones on a tagboard effects layout which I added the extra clipping options from the landgraff.  I'm really digging this now it sounds pretty sweet.

This is how it originally looked I was super pleased with this back in Aug 2015

I don't actually have a gutshot for this I think I was too excited to get it working and just shoved all the wires in wherever I could get them to fit

And after

I had to move the dc socket because I put the extra clipping in and didn't have as much clearance as I thought I did.  I'll grab a 12mm rubber bung/gasket from a hardware store to fill the hole

Build Reports / Harmonic Trem
January 20, 2018, 02:07:19 PM
I finished this up tonight but have been using it with my testing rig for a few months and absolutely love it.  Jon really nailed this one I don't think it will be coming off my board anytime soon, it also sounds excellent as a boost.  Unfortunately I'm less happy with the envirotex I ended up with super small bubbles which I couldn't get out which has never happened before.  I poured 4 enclosures at the same time and this is the only one it happened to.

Still I mustn't grumble it sounds way too good to be annoyed.

Open Discussion / Envirotex over ink
January 05, 2018, 04:41:45 PM
I have a signature on the backplate of one of my guitars which I'd like to preserve and I'm wondering if envirotex would work to protect it.  The backplate is plastic and has been signed in gold pen does anyone know if envirotex is likely to react with it?  I asked a friend to shoot some nitro over it for me but he thinks the nitro might make it run plan B is resin but I have no idea if it's likely to have any reaction or not.

Anyone have any idea if this could cause me any problems or am I being overly cautious.

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Faceplates

I'm going to have a go at using a faceplate for an upcoming build and wondered what thickness of black fr4 you chaps usually use for the task?

Build Reports / Aion Comet DS1
November 20, 2017, 08:17:47 AM
I've never actually owned a DS-1 so thought I'd check the circuit out.  Really easy build on an Aion pcb i added the suggested mods and I'm a bit meh about this one.  It sounds fine but I have a load of other drives which either suit me better or just work better with my amp I'm not sure which.  I only have the Fender these days I sold my vox and marshall a few months ago and suspect it would have worked better with those.  It does look nice though  ;D

General Questions / Multi Effects
November 11, 2017, 12:54:46 PM
I've had an idea for a multi with 4 effects in one box.  I'll only be using one effect at a time is it possible to use a 1776 opto-tron to turn the effect on and a rotary to select which of the four I want to use?  I've had a search on the forum and can't find really find anything.

Open Discussion / Enclosures in Europe
November 05, 2017, 02:14:08 AM
Up until now I've been ordering powder coated 1590BB talls from Banzai with no problems but my last order they sent me boxes which were 1590bb length and width but 45mm tall.  Stuff fits but god they're a lot taller than any other pedals on my board.  I also can't find any boxes on their site with the correct dimensions now.

Anyone else know where I can find a 1590bb tall powder coated enclosure in europe now?  Ordering from the states gets really expensive due to shipping and import taxes.

General Questions / Dual Overdrive Noise
November 02, 2017, 01:53:28 PM
I built a multi for my brother earlier this year with an eternity and a sho.  He's gigged it pretty heavily and loves both sides independently but gets excessive levels of noise when using both sides together.  He doesn't get the same noise when stacking the drive with an external booster or the sho with an external drive.  I'm assuming some shielded cable will help but I'm not sure which wires I should replace with shielded.  Any ideas?

Open Discussion / Blog/Website suggestions
October 22, 2017, 02:02:58 PM
I've decided I'd like to start a blog or website where I can post about pedals, guitar mods, music theory etc but am not sure where to start and am confused by the amount of options out there.

Anyone else on here have a blog or website and would like to share their experiences or advice?

Build Reports / The Burninator & Klone
October 22, 2017, 01:23:51 PM
Boxed both of these up earlier today.  First up is an Amp 11 clone on two fuzzdog pcbs and is part of my mission to complete the entire Tim family tree  ;D  I settled on 1n60s for the clipping on the electra distortion.

Next one is another klone. I've used this graphic before and was very happy with the klone I already had but my OCD being a fickle bitch really didn't like it so built this on another fuzzdog pcb with a switch to turn the buffer on and off.  This seems to have solved the problem with my ocd.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Aquaboy Whine in bypass
October 22, 2017, 01:07:01 PM
My aquaboy sounds great and I'm really happy with it while its turned on but if I turn it off I get a high pitched whine which I'm assuming is clock noise.  There have been no mods or part substitutions.  Any advice on the best way to tackle this?  I get no distortion or whine at all while the pedal is engaged so I'm not sure where to start.

Let me know what other info would be helpful.

General Questions / Aion wiring for lumen
October 21, 2017, 12:34:58 PM
I'm about to box up an Aion comet ds-1 clone and I wanted to ask some advice before I start so I don't make a mistake.  Do I need to connect the SW pad to ground?  It's confused me a little.

Anyone out there wired up an aion pcb to a lumen?
