I just wanted to show some appreciation to the work going on in these parts. I've seen more traffic the past 3 or 4 months and I love it. I've seen some old familiar face come back around and a lot of new faces as well (even if I know some of you from other places 🤣). I'm seeing a lot of killer build reports that are really inspiring. It's great to see Brian and other vendors putting out killer projects that aren't just low gain overdrives. I'm so happy to see this parts of the community spring back to life with some new blood. Seems like everyone is firing on all cylinders and it's really motivating and encouraging. Now, as you were.
But this electra distortion has a tone control and diode switching! It totally changes the game!

If it weren't for the cool stuff available either through madbean or the affiliated vendors (or even various forum members) I'd have lost interest a long time ago.

you don't have a lot of tubes to check and if your troubleshooting goes beyond that then it is time to chopstick ... tapping on the caps and resistors will cause those that are breaking down to be rather microphonic

you'll continue to look at my poorly lit and dirty workbench where you're not entirely certain if I'm keeping a woman in a well for ghastly purposes

Open Discussion / Re: Muff question for bass players

I think the last time I played a green Russian muff was when they were still the ones being sold, but as I understand it they are the preferred muff of bass players.

I have a bassist friend who used to use a green Russian muff he was borrowing from a friend and really liked it so I want to build him one. Any one have any thoughts on if it is worth doing any mods for a bassist as opposed to a guitarist? I am inclined not to, because he was happy with the stock one, but I could put some caps on a switch or something if it makes a big difference. Any one experienced in the ways of Bass Big Muff?
if you don't want to hit up Russian Federation ebay, try 2N4401 transistors and 1N400x  diodes. those are the closest to the originals in terms of hfe and Vf

unless it is the 916B you should be fine to sub it

causing trouble elsewhere ... got a little sidetracked last year chasing down unobtainium parts for the various things I want to eventually build after smallbear announced they were closing ... now that my stash is secured I've shifted focus to some of the more complex builds I have on my plate

Another tidy build by Thewintersoldier- can you tell us what's going on with the "BITE" control?  There's no explanation in the build doc, and the "GAIN" and "VOLUME" functions are already spoken for- I'm puzzled

Is anyone here old enough to remember "Freedom Rock"? Cause that's where my mind went right away.

I must not be old enough, but can I assume that it's the nationalist-propaganda-ridden precursor to "School House Rock?"

In the 80's there was a commercial that played on television all the time for one of those LP compilation type records. It was two redneck type guys sitting at the back of a pickup truck, music in the background. One dude goes "Is that Freedom Rock? Well TURN IT UP!".

So, yeah, like the most USA thing ever.
I could swear that one of the more recent black keys music videos spoofed freedom rock

I've been working multiple-monitor jobs for quite some time now and have yet to have a matching set of monitors ... I don't know how it happens but I know it should stop.

now the things my notes didn't say was whether it was wired as a mosfet or a mosfet body diode, which makes a considerable difference in Vf especially if using the BS170. wired as the body diode it puts the Vf around 1V and for hard clipping that's a pretty sweet spot ... wired as a mosfet you're going to end up with something closer to the turbo rat but with smoother clipping. either way is good and you can't go wrong ... fwiw I used an AMD LM108 in mine

I certainly agree with that ... if I just needed my computer to work and do normal computer things I'd update to this next windows 10 LTSC next month and ride that train to the end

mixed bag here re: windows 11

the troubles: my 2015 macbook pro required a trip to github to even install it (no TPM) ... registry tweaks, another trip to github, and installation of a boot manager to get it fully functional post-install (restoration of context menus, ability to relocate task bar, rEFInd to turn on hardware virtualization for stuff like WSL, hyper-v, and docker) ... that said it has been rock solid as windows 10 has been and these are issues purely related to personal preference, edge use case, and frankly unsupported hardware

my considerably newer HP has some recurring display issues I assume are related either to drivers or power management ... as it is not my daily driver I haven't invested time in addressing the issue beyond rebooting to resolve.

the good stuff: Rounded corners are a long overdue UX improvement, the context menu changes make the OS much more idiot friendly, WSL is definitely better, and Windows Terminal was a power user game changer, near-future improvements like android app sideloading have serious promise
