Wasn't everyone saying guitar was dead in the early 80's when everything was keyboards and synths?  How'd that turn out?

It's certainly not as predominant, but it is still present, even in pop stuff.

I wouldn't expect much of any change to Epiphone unless they push the Gibson name to all of their tiers.  The changes they look to be making so far seem to be more about dropping the ill thought out side businesses that they acquired and were unable to do anything with.

Ultimately, I'd be inclined to see them sticking more with the higher sticker price items as they have better margins and they can trade on the name.   Not unlike a company like Harley Davidson where they don't cater to the deep-in-the-know crowd, rather the peripheral folks that don't know anything but a name.

The more ideal scenario would be that they get real guitar geeks at the top that understand their audience AND can run an efficient business and they become a model guitar company.   I won't hold my breath on that one.

Open Discussion / Re: Carvin Audio reinvented

Keisel and Carvin are completely separate.  Keisel was the guitar wing but they separated off a few years ago due to different views on how to run the business.  Based on Carvins 'closing' down, it's probably easy to determine who was more correct.  I'm guessing Carvins reappearing May be due to completely changing what they are focusing on.  Perhaps they managed to get some late capital infusion but it looks like they will be very different going forward.  An uphill battle in this current market, but hopefully they make a good go of it.

It's probably hard to remember, but the original computers were often women.  Slides rules and the whole shebang.  I would guess that once it became a more respected/critical/high-paying field, the men took the positions and now it's fairly male dominated though that has been changing in recent years.

Mine was rather underwhelming.  Might possibly have been better but it want sealed shut very well at all.  Pack of strings, bunch of picks I don't really need.  One of those foot-knob-pedal-adjuster things.  A George L patch cable.   Not even a "I paid $30 and only got this lousy t-shirt" shirt.  Got about $5 of value for my $30 I'd guess

Mine is coming usps as well.   Tried to get some insight into dimensions or weight but no dice.   I'll find out Monday anyway.

Managed to get in for one.  Got one a few years ago when it was $15 but it was a bit of a disappointment.  Best parts were a good Dunlop t-shirt and Fishman beer glass.  Otherwise it was just a bunch of picks and coupons for places I'd never shop at.  The selection of stuff seems to have grown significantly with real potential for something pretty decent.   Or at least that's what I've been telling myself.   I'll know in a week or two if it was all mis-placed hope.

For US residents, Arrow Electronics has a 20% on the Raspberry Pi 3 plus free next day air shipping. Code is PI20. Some states have to pay sales tax, many do not.

I got in on this yesterday and got the damn thing today.  Fabulous deal.

It's been awhile but I think I used one of those v571's for my TR and it's just fine

As in Tayda caps?

That's what I was thinking. Too bad they don't also sell Cheech caps.
I think the greenie film caps are Cheech brand

If you order, you might also want to snag the TAPLFO IC if you plan on doing a Tapanorator.  Can help to get over the hump for free shipping.

I agree.  The couple bucks in power section bits is minuscule compared to all of the other parts and the PCB.

No worries.  We're potentially having similar issues with the compressor so whatever fixes one may fix the other.

Open Discussion / Aion Lab Series L5 issues
December 11, 2016, 03:59:07 PM
I finally managed to get all of the components together to complete my L5 and I seem to be having two issues.   The most critical one is that I'm getting a high pitched squeal out of IC8.  The other is that the compressor might not be doing much/anything but I haven't gotten to calibrating the trimmer just yet due to the squeal problem.

When I first plugged it in to try it out, once I raised the master volume up at all, the thing squealed like hell.  Bypass was perfectly fine.  Using a signal tracer, I tracked it down to IC8 which was a JRC 4558 that I got from BYOC.  I pulled out IC8 and no squeal, all is good.  I put in a "JRC 4558" from Tayda and same squeal.  This is suggesting to me that the ICs aren't the problem, it's probably something new the surrounding componentry.   I'm going to do a deep dive inspection around that area once I clear the cobwebs, but if anyone has any thoughts as to what might induce that squeal, that may help to narrow down the problem.

As for the compressor, I've noticed that the LED stays on all the time, wether compressor is enabled or not, or if any signal is going through or not. I'm not sure if that's normal, or perhaps tied to it not yet being calibrated.  I can't really tell if it's doing much of anything if I fiddle with the knobs, though again, I should probably get the thing calibrated before I worry too much on that front.
