Open Discussion / My Motorsports adventure....
« on: February 16, 2018, 09:04:38 AM »
Good morning y'all!

Some of you guys seemed to have a bit of interest in what i'm working on in the engine/performance departement...

I'm a petrol head since... ...forever! So it felt natural to me to use my creativity/pseudo-engineering abilities for stuff in that domain.

What i'm currently working on is a new Intake Manifold setup for the Nissan VQ35HR & VQ37VHR engines, those engines can be found in Nissan 350Z - 370Z and Infiniti G35 - G37. These engines due to the way that their cylinder head are designed with variable intake camshaft lift and duration are very receptive to "breather mods" when in a Normally Aspirated (non turbo or supercharged) and LOTS of power gains can be found... ...they are there, just hiding...
The gains are not like what you'd find on let say.... a Honda Civic after installing a Cold Air Intake... and it just becomes a raspy annoying thing...

Allright, meat and potatoes now! My first project is a conversion to use 75mm Throttle Bodies instead of the stock 60mm TBs. To acheive that, an adapter plate was required to accomodate the different "bolt pattern" of the larger TBs and also try to limit the "bottle neck" effect in air flow because of the limitations/tolerances that have to be dealt with the stock intake manifold...

The stock opening on the intake manifold is 61mm, i was able to bore that up to 67mm without compromising the structural integrity of the manifold. With that in mind, to minimize the bottle neck effect mentionned earlier, when having a reducer you don't want it to be a "generic taper" as the more you "vaccum" air in the manifold it becomes counter productive. You instead want a "volute" shape, also known as a Velocity Stack in the petrol head slang.

Here's the final version of the adapter plate that i designed, it took me 3 prototype to end with this one and couple Dyno runs to test the setup, this was made with a buddy that lives in Montreal and have a tuning shop, so i did'nt have to take an 8 hour trip to test out everytime.

In order to get these properly installed and optimise the setup, some work had to be done to the manifold so it accept the adapter, machining, porting and polishing is made in the first stage, as you can see here (stock on the left, modded on the right):

As i'm typing this, i'm now at the second stage of porting, the idea is to have a "seemless" joint between the adapter plate and manifold, as you can see in the picture, there's around 1mm of material remaining in the inner diameter, this have to be sanded and polished.

After this step, the adapter will be "molded in" the manifold and will be ready to receive it's new Throttle Bodies, here's a picture to show you the physical difference in size, there's 2 of these per manifold. (left stock, right 75mm)

The gains we produced using this setup have blown are mind, it's very rare that a "bolt on" solution will yeld that much increase in "wheel horse power"... the vehicule we used for our testing is a 2012 Infiniti G37Xs (AWD) Sedan with an automatic transmission, our baseline Dyno results, with stock intake manifold, throttle bodies and air intake was 256whp (keep in mind that AT transmission makes lots of parasitic loss and that the car is AWD and the fuse was pulled so it be RWD for the Dyno, hence even more power loss in the drivetrain as the transfer case robs some). Our end result with the new setup and 3" Cold Air Intake Setup (pictured below) was 307whp, that's a 51whp increase with a simple bolt on solution... ...and that was my motivation to push forward this DIY project of mine that i'm now working on getting a Patent and offer the setup in a commercial manner.

If this interest some of you guys, i'll post updates about it in this thread so you can see the results and build of this final version.

Open Discussion / Getting there, workshop overhaul!
« on: February 10, 2018, 09:09:35 AM »

Well... in order to be able to build, test or simply have electronic fun, i had to to do a massive makeover/overhaul of my "shop".... ...making like 6 months that i was telling to Pickdropper that i had to do it... lol

Was a freaking mess in there, had become a chaotic storage room... ..still have LOADS of part, fail and other random stuff to sort... ...but it's getting there...!

Open Discussion / ....and here I am now...!
« on: February 01, 2018, 03:03:10 PM »
Hi everybody...'s been a while!

I don't really know where to start since there's so much that have been happening, wich have lead to my "decline" if i can say so.

First, i meant for a long time now to make this thread, give some explanation but i was'nt able, a mix of ego, pride, shame, anxiety... was keeping me from acting.

I have to sincerly thank Dave (pickdropper) for his constant communication with me, as i was'nt answering anyone else.... ...thing that should'nt, that. He truly helped me have some confidence into confronting myself and do what i'm doing right now.

So yeah... long story short...
After 3.5 years of working up North, Fly-In jobs, getting back home and working aswell it slowly drifted me away from building, working on new projects, in the end all my motivation was gone, for pretty much everything in life.
I sure was fooling around with my Jeep and later on with my car... some of you have probably seen on Facebook... ...that acted as a "plaster" as i need to be busy with stuff, but i need concrete results and satisfaction in the little time that i was off...

Anyway... this past summer i've come to a dead end... ...i've quited my job up in the Arctic, the morning i was suppose to leave house to go at the airport, i made the biggest anxiety crisis i ever had... ...and ended at the hospital.
The sum of this... that i have "confined depression", after lots of meetings with specialist and what not, going back in my past... was making many years that i was'nt in a good mental health... ...and that i should have reached for help sooner, wich i now did and continue too.

The consequence is that i had to completely stop my job up North, wich was a bit hard for me, as i'm a hardworker and put lots of pride in that, feeling weak is a thing, admitting and assuming it... the hardest part, i have yet to come over that part.

I'm pretty sure that there's a big mixmatch of feelings towards me in regards of my "let go" and i totally understand it. I'm not writing this thread to get apologize or whatever, i'm doing it for me... i can just feel better about it and feel better for all the people that have put enormous work into  GCFX, truth be told, if it was'nt of the crew, nothing would have happened with that endehavior of mine... yeah, feel free to express yourself, in a nice or mean manner, it's all good! ;)

As i'm writing this, the website is being put back online, i'll make an effort to get stocked again on the many projects and mostly, offer support over here for those who build our stuff. That is my main goal.

ApetoneFX (Jubal81 projects) will no longer be on the page, there's still un-settled matters between me and Jason and that also need to be "fixed".

I know this is all erratic, but it's the best i could do to express myself about this subject, at least i've shown up...

Open Discussion / Anyone have a source for small fiber panels?
« on: July 27, 2016, 10:20:21 PM »
I thought i'd post this here since there's lots of guy that DIY bunch of things, i'm searching for small panels like.... 12x24inch 1/8-2mm thick Carbon Fiber or Graphite Fiber, the laminated stuff.

I need that stuff to build custom engine throttle body butterflys and for my R/C cars....

Open Discussion / Digged out my DigDug!
« on: July 19, 2016, 07:14:57 PM »
I was in need of a refreshing sound, something that would take me out of my usual sound setup habits... while trying bunch of stuff among my pile of pedals... ...i summoned the forgotten! My 1590B etched pcb DigDug....!

That happened the day before i left for my last worktrip, when i came back yesterday, fired up my main amp setup PSU and played directly through my last setting that had that circuit ON.... that thing is just so amazing.... on cleans with a very slow deep and mellow phaser to sort of blend the stepped sequence is something beautiful...

And then! I remembered that i had a DigDug2!  ;D Missing some of the IC to complete... can't wait to get those orders in... was making a while that i did'nt had that feeling of waiting impatiently on parts for a particular project, feels like when i was feeling ready to build a PT2399 delay when i first started out! lol

Needed this sort of thing... fuel my will of building stuff for me like i used to do, anyone here that have been building for a while had this feeling or is maybe in that situation i am/was?

Build Reports / Feels good!
« on: July 04, 2016, 05:58:10 PM »
Was making a while i had'nt build something to be boxed, quite happy of the turnout of this one. A formula similar to what i've used for guitar needs but now setup for bass use.

-Tuner/Mute Output
-Good Ol' Behemoth Bass Driver (Not to be confused with Tinnitus Ezekiel... this is quite different)

Rattle can, elbow grease and copper distressed knobs will always do me goods.

Open Discussion / Digitech Trio, it's cool or?
« on: April 07, 2016, 03:49:50 AM »
Anyone here owned one? When it first got announced i was quite intrigued about it but never had the opportunity to try out, someone offered me one against my Squier Jaguar i got last year....

Would it be good enough for crap clips and other stuff in that style?

Build Reports / Loopz

I've built too many of these... should have one pcb with all that on it...  ::)

Build Reports / Bass Pre-Station

Cool simple and efficient bass pre-input multi i've put together for a local friend.

Using the IDA Behemoth Bass Driver with added effect order switch to position the boost, GCFX RottenKomp sitting in front of all that, covers a freaking wide range of clean and dirty toanz with that simple setup, much happy of the outcome.

Despite the amount of pre-wiring, been able to keep it clean wich made me even happier :)

Open Discussion / New Isolated 1SPOT coming.
« on: May 09, 2015, 05:25:49 PM »
VisualSound/TrueTone are releasing 2 new one spots with isolated outputs.

The C12, by the info and what is seen on their website seems to be very interesting, will probably snag one when it comes out.
