Open Discussion / Which Screamer?
September 25, 2023, 12:22:45 AM
Hello all... overdrive suggestions please!

I've always been a big fan of the old Ibanez TS808. But want to try something with a slightly less exaggerated mid-range?  I guess also with not too much bass response, because I like how the TS808 stacks and tightens up my lead tone.  Guess I'm after something with a different mid-range flavor. Your thoughts? :)

General Questions / Overload LED for Total Recall?
February 25, 2022, 10:04:40 PM
Hey dudes!  :)
Had a search and can't find anything about the overload circuit omitted from the TR.  I'm planning a 1590XX build, so should have room to fit it in there.  Any comments/recommendations on this?

Hey all! I'm planning my next build, a Total Recall PCB I've had for a few years.  I think I want to use a 1590XX in landscape orientation, and make it look like an old big box DMM.

Hoping to imitate something like this.  I'd move the blend pot to match this control orientation.

I only have pretty basic graphic design skills, so was wondering perhaps if anyone knows of any existing artwork from the DMM big boxes out there I could use to get me started?  Or any tips?  My idea was to use GIMP to create a vector file for a Tayda UV print job.  Thanks in advance :)

General Questions / CA3080? For Ross style compressor
February 07, 2020, 01:50:32 AM
Hey all!  :)

I'm hoping to build a sweet little compressor pcb which Jason (jubal81) kindly sent me... several years ago!
It needs a CA3080 OTA, I was wondering are those cheap ones on eBay legit?  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Open Discussion / Back to school... Again!
July 29, 2019, 07:22:29 PM
Picked it up again!

In 2017 I started studying towards a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.   After having a career change to an electronic serviceman in 2013, I realised I really liked all this learning stuff!  So, it's happening.... just started 2nd semester this year, reduced my hours  at work and taking two papers... Maths, and Computer programming (Python).
Dang it feels great to be back doing this again!
If things go well, I might be able to go full time study from 2020 ;D

Woo! Hope you are well, and if you celebrate Christmas that you can spend time with loved ones today! My Kids will be ripping into what's under the tree this morning, then we're celebrating with friends for lunch. Merry Christmas all from New Zealand!  :)

Been checking out these on ebay... lots of options available!  Does anyone have any recommendations?
I guess I'd like something with reasonable accuracy 2-5%ish that's easy to use... and cheeep.  Just in case someone has taken the plunge and had an opinion on one of the cheaper ones out there

I mainly want to test reclaimed parts, roll some inductors (counting the turns but it's nice to test also) and test transistors & FETs etc.  ESR is also interesting to me but prolly not important.

Finally built one for myself... made one similar a few years ago which I sold, had the spare decal sitting around since then.
*Wowrarecollectible* NOS J201s   ;D

Always liked this pretty fierce Dual Rec sounding overdrive.  The EQ was never perfect in this circuit, but it's very useable.   :)

Build Reports / 3 Wise Kittehs (Madbean Bloviator)
June 19, 2017, 06:21:01 AM

3 wise kittehs will buff your toans.  Obey.

Hand painted with a brush using acrylic fine art paint... rockin teh green LED.  Knobs are from ebay.  Sticker courtesy of my daughters now neglected primary school sticker collection.  This is the previous pcb version, but I added added the volume control option available on the latest board.  Handy dandy wee pedal :)

Thought I'd share this here... Keysight has competition open to a lot of countries.  No affiliation of mine, just a public service announcement.

Open Discussion / A day of small beginnings...
January 25, 2017, 07:30:40 AM
I'm going back to school... again! ;D

After years of waiting, this semester I finally start my electronic engineering degree!  Specifically the 'Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Hons)' at the University of Canterbury here in Christchurch...  Big thanks to my bosses, who have been really supportive and allowed me to start part-time.  I AM SO PUMPED!
I really wanted to share it here with you Madbeaners because pedal-building was an important catalyst in me discovering my new direction, I ended up changing career 5 years ago when I did some pre-trade training and now work as an electronic technician.   I'm really looking forward to stretching the grey matter, although it may mean the pedal builds will slow down even further.  Obviously a bit gushy right now so scuse me.

Yay for learning stuff...  Woo! ;D

Build Reports / Hunter fuzz

Mike (flanagan0718) very kindly PIF'ed me a prototype pcb and transistors to try out, and here she is in her fuzzy glory. THANKS MIKE! :)

From what I understand it's based on a Heavy weather shooo geezer.  Theme is coffee.  Regular has a red LED, Decaf green...  Rattle can paint with waterslide decals.  A bit disappointed with crap crappy phone pics, looks killah in teh flesh... but meh  :-[

Build Reports / Power supply! Mk2
October 09, 2016, 08:49:11 AM

What to say?  I built a power-supply with this transformer a few years ago, but dropped it.  Oops.  Well this is the remake, decided to fab a pcb.  LM317 based variable power supply, x4 isolated, tweakable DCV from the outside.  Heatsinked to the enclosure.  I use this on the bench, but nice to have a backup for the pedalboard... not that I play much.  This has been sitting almost finished for a while, it was great to knock it off this weekend :)

Oh, and how about those skyscraper electros!?!  ;D

Open Discussion / Eye of the Tiger
September 26, 2016, 09:56:33 PM
I've lost it. Really hoping its a short phase... with teenage kids, a stressful job, we've just moved house to a new neighbourhood... it's been one heck of a year so far.

Now we're settled in, but I have lost the desire to build pedals or play guitar.  I have set up a nice new workbench in my garage, it remains un-used.  I have a dedicated music room with guitars, amps and pedals set up ready to go... but no desire to play.  All I do is watch Star Trek TNG re-runs or play computer games in my downtime.

Meh.  Needs moar eye of the tiger :-\

Build Reports / 2015 Builds!

'Dark Zag'.

This was a refinish doing a better job 2nd time round.  Madbean Lowrider... Art by my son when he was 7 (He's 13 now!)

'Sparklehorn' Madbean Sparklehorn.

Tribute to the my little pony of the same name
This had a tails board which I eventually ended up removing... there was a faint hiss introduced to the chain from the overdrive section of this pedal... shoulda thought of that first!  ohwells, true bypass now :)  Toggle at the top operates the delay.

Demo of the sparklehorn.  Great one stomp solo pedal!

'Sharks with Laserbeams' Madbean Sharkfin.
Big thanks to Brian who kindly PIF'd me this pcb!

Demo of the sharkfin... uber fun times to be had!

That's what I managed complete last year :)

Been cold turkey a while now... busy with life and stuff, as you do

Two firsts, my first pedaltrain clone! lol.  (This thing is seriously lightweight!)

And my first actual tubescreamer clone (which I really like)
TS-9, No o/p buffer, 3-way eq sw and 2-way clipping

Obligatory guts... vero ftw!

Build Reports / Goin to the Funktion??
May 17, 2013, 03:35:38 AM
Been working on this a while... Analogue function generator pcb using XR-2206

(The range stated is a bit cheeky, technically it ouputs upto 1MHz, but usuable stuff is 1.5Hz to 100kHz)

I was nervous as this was my first fabbed pcb... it spent a long time on my breadboard waiting for the tedious revisions to get finalised.  Worth it tho, works great first time with no surprises... just gooogeous waveforms  ;D
